I’ve been following this story on TheLiberalOC.com about 34th District Senator Lou Correa and his puzzling action of voting against the Democrats’ resolution opposing the troop surge in Iraq last week. For the past nine days, Mike Lawson of the TheLiberalOC.com, as well as several other OC bloggers, have been trying to get an explanation from Correa about his vote. Well, today, rather than release an official statement about the matter, Correa decides to return calls. And he’s asking to keep the convos private and off the OC blogosphere.
He DOES realize that he’s asking this of bloggers … does he?
I don’t have a number of how many calls and messages were left with Correa asking for an explanation of his vote, but I have to agree that releasing a statement would be (if anything) more time and cost efficient than calling each person back. And why the secrecy? If he’s responding by saying that he stands by his vote, then why not publicly claim it? Instead he asks to keep it on the down-low??
It just doesn’t make much sense, and it’s crap like this that makes me sick of politicians. You (the voting public) start asking more questions and simply put, it starts to chip away at the trust you’ve placed in them.
Oh, and if you’re curious too, just give Correa’s office a call at (916)651-4034.

Senator Barack Obama will be speaking in Los Angeles on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. The event is free to the public (as will parking), but they are offering e-mail RSVP to (supposedly) get you in the gates faster. Rain or shine. Gates open at 2pm.
For more information, visit www.barackobama.com.

The League of Conservation Voters has got a great site going to help make global warming a priority in the 2008 presidential elections. Check out The Heat is On. The site has news updates related to climate issues, but what I find really neat (and helpful) are the profiles of the candidates. Quick bios are followed by any recent statements about global warming, offering a kind of CliffsNotes guide for each candidate (granted, many are still just possible candidates at this point). Some have statements as recent as January 2007, a few have quotes from articles published a couple of years ago, while at least one has zlich. There’s also an events calendar with a way to search by location; from this I found that Giuliani, my old hometown’s former mayor, is having a golf fundraiser this Monday in Palm Springs.
Speaking of politics and the LCV, from their site, you can look up how your Congress representatives scored in 2006. I’m quite embarrassed at my district’s rep, what with his 17% score and all. It’s nice to see that he voted yes to prevent offshore drilling one month, and then also vote yes to increase offshore drilling the following month. Honestly, sometimes I’m embarrassed to admit I live in Orange County.
In other insomnia-induced ramblings … this week I’ve made the decision to wean myself off my dependency on Swiffer products. Half of our house has bamboo flooring, which has been made so much easier to clean with the SweeprVac and Wet Jet. Unfortunately, using and then throwing away all those dirty pads make me feel rotten, so I have GOT to quit whining and switch to less wasteful (and less toxic) methods. I’m thinking mops with washable pads. While I’m at it, I’m also going to wean myself off of Swiffer Dusters, opting for microfiber cloths for de-dusting purposes. My husband is skeptical, but I’m hopeful I can curb my Swiffer addiction.

In mulling over who should be the Democratic candidate in 2008, I’ve often joked (kind of) that not only should Al Gore run, but the country should just give him the Presidency because we owe it to him. I mean, how great would it be? A lot of people, including myself, already know and trust him. As impressed I am with Obama, and as much as I respect what Edwards does, something really awful would have to happen for me to take my support away from Gore. (Don’t bother asking me about Hillary. I haven’t been impressed by her at all. It doesn’t matter that she’s a woman and I’m a feminist; I find her untrustworthy, plain and simple.)
Anywhoo, so I was quite thrilled to read this recent article on Rolling Stone’s web site about Why Gore Should Run and How He Can Win. Obviously, it’s all still wishful thinking at this point, and I’m trying not to get my hopes up for fear of getting crushed if Gore ends up NOT entering the race.
But damn. Just IMAGINE. As the article states at the very end…
This, agrees Luntz, is Gore’s greatest draw. “Democratic voters in 2008 are not only looking to turn back the last eight years, but to erase the last eight years,” he says. “If I were working for Gore, I’d message around a single word: Imagine. ‘Imagine if I’d been president instead of George W. Bush. Imagine where we’d be today.’ “
