This past weekend I decided to switch our cat’s litter to something a bit more natural. We had been using clay clumping litter for years, and I’ve always hated the thought of inhaling the dust whenever I’m cleaning the stuff. Thing was, it’s easy to get a 14lb jug of clumping litter for under $5. But as with many things these days, I’m willing to shell out a bit more money for something that I can (socially and physically) live with.
I ended up with a box of Swheat Scoop, which is made from naturally processed wheat. I haven’t read much on it, but the company that makes ‘em says it’s 100% biodegradable, contains no chemicals, is non-toxic, and isn’t harmful when ingested. (Thankfully, our cat’s never been one to fancy the Kitty Roca.) It’s a clumping litter, and while it doesn’t seem to clump as well as the usual clay stuff, it does it’s job and cleaning the box doesn’t take any more or less time than before.
I do love the fact that there’s no noticeable dust flying about. Given my strange sinus issues, I’m not sneezing 20 times in a row after cleaning. The company also says that it’s totally safe to flush, given you break up large chunks and let it sit in the water for 20 minutes before flushing. My husband’s not too thrilled about this method of disposal, but the other options are to keep putting them in plastic bags and throwing them with the trash. Not good ’cause the plastic bags don’t decompose. I suppose I can use recycled paper bags? Or how about biodegradable poop bags??
