My New act2 GreenSmart Case

December 13, 2007 8:01 pm

My new laptop case arrived today! Too freakin’ bad they sent the WRONG one! So not only did they send me the Eco Jacket instead of the Eco Sleeve (which would a score), but unfortunately, it’s too damn small for my laptop so it’s unusable.

So now I probably have to send it back and have the correct one shipped. Green Laptop Case

December 10, 2007 11:55 pm

GreenSmart Laptop SleeveI’ve been looking for an eco-friendly case or sleeve for the new MacBook and decided to get an act2 GreenSmart Laptop Sleeve by Shoreline. It was a choice between that and something handmade from Etsy, specifically one of these Felt Safe sleeves by Manoeuvre.

I decided to go with the GreenSmart sleeves after reading a review of another product by Shoreline at Sustainablog and, well, because I like ‘em. (Though a nagging voice in the back of my head keeps saying that it may be the less “green” option of the two.) Their site says that the outer and inner fabric is made from 100% post-consumer PET water and soda bottles (six to eight 16oz plastic bottles), with the padding made from 100% recycled industrial material (what exactly does that mean anyway?). And at $24.99 each, it was hard to pass up.

Fresh Whole Rabbits

What else do people buy on Amazon when they buy fresh whole rabbits? I saw this on Digg the other day. As a commenter said, I have no desire to be at THAT dinner party.

The Poop Scoop, Part Two

December 8, 2007 12:26 pm

A few weeks ago I finally made a decision on diapers. To start off, we’re gonna go with the bumGenius one-size pocket diapers. The biggest deciding factor was that it’s supposed to grow with the baby, therefore reducing the need to buy new sizes as the little one gets bigger. The hook & loop tabs are also supposed to make securing the diaper super easy (if you have Windows Media, click here to watch a short demo clip of someone putting on one of these diapers on a squirmy baby).

bumGeniusMy mom and her two sisters ordered a few of these for us for our baby registry, and I received them yesterday. I’ve been playing around with them this morning and am generally excited to see them in action. However, snapping the thing up to the smallest setting, it still seems a little big for most average-sized newborns. (Then again, who knows, ours could turn out to be bigger than average.) I think the key to making their use very easy is to pre-stuff the inserts and not wait until a diaper is needed. That way, just grab one just like you’d grab a disposable! Can’t get easier than that!

Of course, then there’s laundry. At the beginning, the choice was which was a lesser evil: adding waste to landfills that’ll take hundreds of years to decompose or increasing water and power consumption at home for laundry? Obviously, I decided that increasing our water and power consumption is less evil than contributing (more) to landfills. This will be an interesting test for me. For those of you who know me, you might know that laundry isn’t one of my favorite household chores. It’s not so much the washing part, it’s the folding and putting away. However, when pressed, I will suck it up and get the job done (as evidenced last week when I laundered, folded, and put away THREE LOADS of hand-me-down baby clothes). Will D help in washing diapers? I doubt it, but that’s OK. I know I’m anal enough that I’ll figure out a way that I like them done, and anything else would be forbidden. Besides, we’re also asking for some Seventh Generation disposables for those times I’m not around and D has to do all the diapering himself.

New Toy

Yeah OK, so this hippie’s got a shiny new toy … I just received a MacBook Pro for my birthday, and it’s fuuuun.
