Eating Veg in the OC

March 22, 2007 9:46 pm

I have another confession: while I consider myself a vegetarian, I do indulge in the occasional consumption of seafood. (Specifically, we’ll have sushi about once a month.) For the most part though, I’m perfectly fine having a meat-less diet. Even when I’m not in the mood to cook, it’s easy enough to find veggie-friendly meals at various restaurants, or the Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods nearby.

At our favorite Mexican restaurant, Los Cabos on Tustin Avenue, I usually go for the cheese enchiladas. Add some beans and rice in there and I’m usually in a food coma for at least 24 hours. For quick to-go meals, a diner up the hill will make me a grilled cheese sandwich on wheat bread with french fries on the side. Zito’s, the pizza place up in the Albertson’s lot on Jamboree, has an excellent pizza with vegetarian sausage.

Native FoodsThese choices are fine once in a while, but I do want to start discovering new places to go that has HEALTHIER veggie choices. While leafing through a recent issue of VegNews, I saw an advertisement for the The Native Foods Restaurant Cookbook. I noticed that they have a location in Costa Mesa, so of course, I was all “I have GOT to check this out!” I’m planning on paying a little visit this weekend, and just by looking at their menu, I’m already salivating. There are so many good-looking things to eat on their menu that I think I’m going to have to start visiting them weekly! Hollywood Bowl? Or maybe the Latino Lover pizza? I can’t wait!

As if mouth-watering green food isn’t enough, they also hold classes and other special events (at all their locations). This Saturday March 24, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Costa Mesa location, there will be an event titled Greenology at the CAMP:

Come enjoy a “Green Day” at the CAMP in Costa Mesa - a day dedicated to encouraging green lifestyles, accompanied by a special Native Foods “green” menu - Green Soup, Green Soba Salad and a Green Dessert - go green!
